I had to leave to take my mother's ashes to New York for a burial, so my son had to stay at my house an hour and a half away to take care of it and the pets. We made sure that the rent was paid before the first of the month and, not knowing the exact amount, wrote a check and asked that they contact us if there was a difference. The apartment cashed the check, and I left for New York while my son stayed with my animals. We thought everything was alright. However, my son had no car, so upon organizing a day to get his things on the 12th, a note was left saying we owed more money. No phone calls were made and I was contacted by my son while I was still in New York. When I tried to call the apartment in the morning, I got no answer. This was their way of trying to ruin people's credit and keep their deposit.
